We've been designing our modern, new-vintage t-shirts from our base in England since June 2005. 2smartmonkeys was born of a hideous marriage of inconvenience between Steve Maggs and Tim Clarke (two not necessarily smart but rather over-confident monkeys) in the summer of 2005.
It was initially a 'we can do that, so why don't we?' kind of thing, where after doing some t-shirts for a friend's stag do we realised that if having an original t-shirt gets that many girls to talk to you there could be something in it. And after roughly three minutes of thought (entirely about monkeys) the name 2smartmonkeys was offered up and seemed to fit nicely.
The two of us mentioned above have backgrounds in print design/journalism and advertising respectively and I (Steve) did actually sacrifice (not entirely voluntarily) a job to give 2smartmonkeys the loving attention it deserves. We try and take it seriously now, even occasionally wearing trousers to work, and get immense pleasure seeing that someone likes our stuff enough to pay for it. There is now a third member of staff who likes to be called The Jimp, but that's a story for another time.
Since the almost accidental beginning we've just stuck to designing t-shirts inspired by stuff that we like and that we think other people will like, to make them stand out from the mass market crowd and feel a bit freer for having something lovingly crafted about their person.
If you want to stand out from the crowd and get noticed for the right reasons then you've come to the right place. And if you can't find what you want, or if you want something done differently don't be afraid to ask.
They say there is only a 2 per cent difference between the DNA of monkeys and humans. But what are we doing with our 2 per cent? Getting jobs, starting wars, destroying the environment, generally getting worked up and stressed out. Meanwhile the most energetic activity in a monkeys day is likely to be climbing a tree and having a damn good scratch. Amen.
